Copying Beethoven

 2.30 p.m. | Het Nutshuis

Directed by Agnieszka Holland

In Copying Beethoven the director, Agnieszka Holland, has given the composer a charming – albeit fictional – assistant. With ample musical insight the girl guides the deaf and cranky composer, who is set on conducting the piece himself, through the first performance of his Ninth Symphony. The ten-minute recording of the performance – to a soundtrack of the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink – is, without a doubt, the highlight of the film. It is an incredibly strong fragment, with fascinating camera work, fantastic editing and – of course – Beethoven’s exhilarating, goose-bump eliciting music. Even if you are neither a connoisseur nor a fan, your enthusiasm for Beethoven’s Ninth and the Great Fugue cannot help but be awakened after seeing Copying Beethoven.
