Schumann and other composers under a neurological magnifying glass

By Dick Swaab

Creativity can be defined as the ability to create something new (e.g. a musical composition) from existing components (e.g. music notes). The composer’s genetic background and mood play a significant role in the creative process.  This can be illustrated, for instance, by the fluctuations in productivity during Robert Schumann’s manic-depressive episodes, or the way in which the seasons influenced the work of Tchaikovsky.
